Top 20 Dharma Movies

Lisette and I both love seeing movies. Admittedly, we see Dharma teachings in everything. But sometimes the teachings really jump off the screen for us. Here’s JC and Dr. G’s list of our Top 20 favorite Dharma Movies. Amazingly, we even agree on the order.

Note: Some of these can be perceived as violent. We see them as destroying our mental afflictions.

1. The Matrix Trilogy. The Matrix teaches Three Principal Paths, Matrix Reloaded mainly Karma, and Matrix Revolutions mainly Compasssion as the path for saving the world.

2. Gandhi. One the greatest films ever made, Gandhi demonstrates how to use method and wisdom by being the change you want to see in the world.

3. Revolver. It’s Pulp Fiction meets Analytical Meditation. A gangster discovers that the conceptualize self is the illusion that causes suffering and that the only enemy is the enemy within.
4. V for Vendetta. No film captures the tough love of a Lama better.

5. Groundhog Day. We’re all stuck in the cycle until we get it right by caring for others first.

6. Solaris. The 2002 edition subtly conveys the Two Extremes: things exist outside and things don’t matter if they are dream. The conclusion finds the Middle Way and happiness that lasts.

7. Next. Shows the power of concentration to save the world.

8. The Illusionist. Things are not they seem.

9. Somewhere in Time. The emptiness of time and how mind makes world.

10. Fight Club. Renunciation and creating a new mental image of yourself.

11. Clueless. Taking care of others in more fun!

12. Unbreakable. Discovering the Superhero within.

13. Vanilla Sky. The Cameron Crow version conveys how life is an illusion.

14. Amelie. The joy of secretly taking care of others.

15. Peaceful Warrior. It takes inner strength to follow a Lama.

16. K-Pax. Being a Bodhisattva is like being from another planet.

17. What Dreams May Come. Never forget those who are in suffering.

18. Constantine. Karmic suicides by putting others first to escape lower realms.

19. Paycheck. You have left yourself all the clues you need to find freedom.

20. Lady in the Water. Nobody is who they seem.
